About us

The Rannu congregation is the smallest in the EELC Valga Prosthetic. The number of donors in 2017 18, the number of those involved in baptism by congregation can reach up to three hundred.

The town of Rannu was built ten kilometers from the church during the Soviet era and there is no transportation from there.

Only a few farms are located around the church. Rannu Parish is one of the oldest in Estonia. Rannus was known to be an independent priest in 1347. The present-day St. Martin’s Church dates back to the 15th century. This is evidenced by some of the details retained in the church choir and the longhouse, which at the same time confirm that the Rannu Church could have been one of the most outstanding Estonian churches at the time.

The Church Interior

The pulpit, the corpus of which was made by the master of Tartu in the mid-16th century (1554.) deserves the most attention from the interior of the church. The stairwell and the speaker stand have been added in the 17th century. Presumably, it has been brought to the church of Rannu from some of the churches in the city of Tartu in connection with church repairs in the 1640s. The 1634 visitation protocol shows that Rannus was not yet in the pulpit. Artistically, it belongs to the Renaissance style and is the oldest preserved pulpit in the Baltics. On the sides of the pulpit are carved reliefs depicting Christ with John the Baptist, Moses, and Aaron. This combination is quite exceptional as Christ is usually portrayed with four evangelists.
